Abdul El-Sayed, First Muslim Senator Elect, Has Karnataka Ties Through Wife Sarah Jukaku

Reporting published on November 5 has highlighted the Karnataka family connections of Sarah Jukaku, wife of Abdul El-Sayed, following his historic US Senate election victory in Michigan. According to The New Indian Express , her family still has homes in Bhatkal and Bengaluru, although a cousin said her last visit to India was more than a decade ago.
El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the US Senate, Reuters reported on November 4 , citing media projections. The Democrat won Michigan’s open seat, taking over from retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
As of November 5, the precise description is senator elect, rather than a serving senator. The election reporting establishes a projected victory, not final state certification.
Sarah Jukaku’s Roots in Coastal Karnataka
The family connection runs through Sarah’s father and paternal grandfather, whose lives link the family to Bhatkal, a town in coastal Karnataka, and Bengaluru.
According to The Indian Express , her father, Dr. Tayeb Jukaku, grew up in Bhatkal and studied medicine in Bengaluru. A nephrologist, he spent time in the Middle East before settling in Michigan in the 1980s.
The newspaper reports that many extended family members subsequently settled in Bengaluru, while Sarah’s immediate family largely remained in the United States. It identifies the Jukaku family as belonging to the Nawayath community.
A Grandfather Remembered for Public Service
Sarah’s paternal grandfather, Jukaku Shamsuddin, was a lawyer who served as deputy finance minister in the former Mysore State government under Chief Minister B. D. Jatti, according to The Indian Express.
The newspaper cites journalist and biographer Aftab Husain Kola, who credits Shamsuddin with contributions to Bhatkal’s town planning, roads, electricity, and educational institutions. These assessments reflect local reporting and recollections.
Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen, a Bhatkal educational trust, named its administrative building after him, the newspaper reports.
What the Latest Reporting Establishes
Relatives have described efforts by Sarah’s father to keep his children connected to Karnataka through visits to Bhatkal and Bengaluru.
However, the November 5 account in The New Indian Express adds an important qualification: a cousin said Sarah last visited India for a family wedding in Bhatkal more than a decade earlier.
The reported Karnataka connection is therefore one of family ancestry, relatives, and continuing family property ties. It should not be read as evidence of frequent recent visits by Sarah herself.
