July 1, 2008 - The 2008 State Farm South
Asian Spelling Bee
(www.southasianspellingbee.com) began
its 8 city tour this past weekend with
the first two events in the NJ and DC
areas.
Over 150 spellers participated in the
contest and a total of 6 winners were
announced.
In NJ, Akhshat Shekhar of West Roxbury,
MA was the Regional champ and the first
and second runners up were Akhinav Raval
of Jersey City, NJ and Sukanya Roy of
Abington, PA.
In DC, Sricharan Gumudavelli of
Cockeysville, MD was the regional champ
and the first and second runners up were
Jhanavi Iyer of Enola, PA and Shruti
Anant of Centerville, VA.
The winners received cash prizes of
$500, $300 and $200 respectively from
Makemytrip.com.
Children upto 14 years of age are
eligible to participate and the contest
saw spellers of even 6 years of age
compete and make it past a few rounds.

The top two winners plus one parent each
from every city will be given an all
expenses paid trip to NJ on Aug 16 for
the FINALS.
The contest is being co-sponsored by
Western Union and Makemytrip.com and
will be telecast globally on Sony
Entertainment Television-ASIA.
