An
interview with - Kim Sharma
She is surely not a girl next door. Rather, she has
maintained an oomph image on the silver screen.
Glamorous Kim Sharma feels that her career was not a
steady flow of hits, but she still is happy about the
way its going. Her forthcoming comic flick Tom Dick
and Harry is ready for release. IndiaFM gets a peek
about the film and her career.
Bijlee is a loud character
I am playing a fisher woman called Bijlee. It's an
interesting character. She is one of the mad
characters of the movie. She abuses everyone, talks in
Marathi and fights with everybody around her. She is
very funny and a completely loud character. She is
slightly naive and at the same time she is very smart.
Dino is her love interest. But it was easy because
everybody was acting mad. You just have to act as mad
as them. You're the only odd one out when everyone is
acting normal.
Language was not a barrier
I know how to speak Marathi. I am very fluent in that
language. I just have to incorporate in more
colloquial level, in terms of how they speak locally.
I speak Marathi with my servants and I have picked it
up over the years now. Now everyone speaks Marathi in
Bombay because it's a language since school.
I am big fan of spontaneity
No identification with character
I don't identify with the role. For this role I was a
little nervous, which I am not usually. I was quite
blase about going onset. I am big fan of spontaneity.
But for this I thought I would figure it out before I
go on set or my performance would be thanda. I would
not be able to give what Deepak wants. I don't
identify with being a fisherwoman. It's a loud
character. There are no subtle aspects to such a
performance and that attracted me. She is loud, she
will shout at you. She will throw a fish on you.
Hired a machchiwali
Deepak told me to visit the fish market everyday just
to have an idea about my character. He said you better
go to the fish market everyday and I agreed but didn't
visit any. The day before the shooting I got scared so
I called a machchiwali, who comes to sell fish. I gave
her a hundred bucks. She showed me her basket and how
she cut fish. Next day when I went on the set and gave
first shot, it was a one take ok. Deepak loved it. He
said that he had told me it's going to work since I
had actually spent time with fisherwomen.
Acting is only a job
Work does not have a very steady flow for me
After my first film, the work has not had steady flow
for me. It's not been as good as it should have been
considering where I started from. So I don't want
think of these things now. I wanted to work with
people whom I like. I want to do films that I believe
in. Where I was and where I am today does not matter
to me. I believe in myself. If I start thinking about
such things then it will affect my work. Life is too
short and acting is only a job.
Deepak as a director
I had a wonderful time with him. He is very sweet
person and I got along with him well. He really used
to pamper me on the set. He gave me a lot of scope. He
is a fabulous director. I am really fond of him.
Celina and me
Unfortunately we did not meet on the set. I mean I did
not have any work with her so there is no question of
rapport. There was no question of a cat fight between
us. There were no problems from my side. I am an
extremely upfront person. If I have a problem with
someone, I have to speak about it. I'm not aware of
any controversy. Off late, I have not been in any
controversy.
Controversy about Ladies Tailor
I don't know that Subhash Ghai's niece was promised
the same role. I know there was lot of controversy
regarding the casting. Only thing I know is that I am
doing this film because of this character. It's a
simple character, something that I haven't played yet.
It's a deglamourized role, which people don't give me.
Because the director is new and willing to experiment
I bagged it. Replacing anyone is not in actor's hands,
it's a director's individual decision. I didn't like
to step into anybody's shoe or take work away from
anybody. I would not like anybody to replace me in the
film that I am keen on doing. So in that respect I
really empathize with the person concerned. But I am
just happy that I got this character because I really
wanted to do something very simple and deglamorised.
I have grown, which I think is a big thing!
I am surely not a next door girl
I may be glamorous in real life. Definitely I am fond
of clothes and style and I do follow all that. I am
not exactly a girl next door but the point of being an
actress is portraying a various array of roles. So if
I keep doing the same thing, at some point it will get
boring . It's not really to prove to somebody or show
anyone but it's for my own interest. It's an
experience for me. I would like to do deglamorised
roles if they are different.
I have grown as an actor
I have grown as an actor, as a professional and also
as a human being. It's not only mentally but yes in
all terms. It's been five years in the industry now. I
have grown in age. That includes a sense maturity and
experience of five years of working in this industry.
I think I am more serious about my work now than I was
then. I am more committed towards it. I have grown,
which I think is a big thing!
I am happy with the way my career is going
I didn't come with any expectations I have come from a
non film background. I had never wanted to join films
and today I have five journalists sitting on the
table, talking to me about myself. So for me that's
great. I know I am capable. The frustration is there
when you know you are not capable. You don't know what
to do. I am very happy with the way my career is
going. I have always been happy even when I didn't
have work. Today I have work and I am happy. If
tomorrow I have lots of work I'll be happier.
Forthcoming films...
I have film called Kudiyon Ka hai Zamana with Rekha
and Mahima directed by Amar Bhutala. It's a chic film
but not about women's rights or anything. It's about
women and what they go through. The film is about
women and their mind set. My character is quite dumb.
She is naive and she believes in love. I tried to give
a softness to the character. Then there is The
Whisperers, in which I play a pop singer for the first
time. The film is about Rahul and Manoj. The reason to
accept it was that I wanted to do an English film. My
role is quite interesting. She is a star and they have
tried to give the whole feel. Nehle Pe Dehla is
waiting for release. The film has a good star cast of
Saif, Sanjay, Bipasha and me. There is Ladies Tailor
with Rajpal Yadav. I have got a cameo in Tanuja
Chandra's film called Rocking.
